The Lore

Where vintage meets vision

Michelle Varinata knew who she was at a very early age. Surrounded by celebrity posters, tabloids and stacks of fashion magazines from Seventeen to Teen Vogue, Michelle asked her grandmother A. Soeng (a.k.a. Mak Ari) to make her the cutest clothes. Together, they bonded over fashion shows, fabric shopping and sewing, where Michelle learned to sew from her grandmother/Mak Ari. In high school, Michelle’s mother took her to bazaar sales, where she learned about vintage designer archives. Rather than getting a part time job, Michelle sold vintage clothes as a hobby in college. It wasn’t until the pandemic that Michelle decided to pursue this full time by changing careers from writing to fashion. Inspired by her girlhood in Jakarta at her grandma’s studio, love of pop culture and vintage shopping in both LA + NYC, Michelle created a vintage store that’s a one stop shop that marries pop culture and fashion.
